CHAPTER 1: The Muddy Koi Pond and the Insolent Dismissal
Part 1
When a wealthy socialite threatened to ruin her housekeeper’s career for daring to stand in her way, the arrogant woman collapsed in sheer terror as a silent billionaire stepped out of a Maybach and bowed deeply to the working-class woman, saying, “Madam President, the board is waiting for you to sign the dissolution order for this woman’s entire corporate empire.”
Inside the opulent marble foyer of the Bel-Air mansion, Vanessa Holloway let out a shrill scream that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.
She jabbed a manicured acrylic fingernail directly into my chest.
“You clumsy, incompetent peasant!”
A brand-new, ivory silk designer dress lay in a crumpled heap at her feet, stained with a dark splash of dark-roast coffee.
“You did this on purpose! Just look at what your absolute clumsiness has done to my favorite gown!”
I stood entirely still, keeping my gaze lowered to the polished travertine floor.
“I am truly sorry, Mrs. Holloway. I simply slipped on the freshly waxed landing.”
Vanessa threw her head back in sheer disbelief, her gold chandelier earrings violently swinging.
“Sorry? Sorry doesn’t replace a five-thousand-dollar custom piece!”
She reached down, violently snatching up my worn leather tote bag from the bench.
“You’re fired! You are out on the street right this instant!”
Without a second thought, she marched over to the massive double glass doors leading out to the back patio.
“And take your pathetic little belongings with you!”
She swung the door open and hurled my leather tote straight into the murky depths of the estate’s koi pond.
It landed with a heavy, wet thud against the water’s surface, slowly sinking into the muck alongside several large, startled orange fish.
“Consider that your severance pay!”
Before I could even blink, she stalked back inside and snatched up a $4,500 designer handbag resting on the console table.
“And for good measure, I’m tossing this in too, since you’ve probably been stealing from my closet all month!”
She hurled the expensive leather purse into the muddy water right after my bag.
I watched the designer bag slip beneath the algae-covered surface without saying a single word.
“Don’t just stand there staring at me like a mute ghost!”
Vanessa pulled her gold-plated smartphone from her pocket with trembling fingers, stabbing furiously at the screen.
“I’m calling every domestic placement agency from Santa Barbara to San Diego right now.”
She pressed the phone to her ear, glaring daggers in my direction.
“I’ll make damn sure you never clean another toilet in the state of California again, you ungrateful thief.”
I slowly walked down the marble steps and stepped out into the damp garden grass.
I bent down at the edge of the muddy pond, reaching into the cold water to retrieve my soaked leather tote bag.
I pulled it out, letting the dark water drip onto the paving stones, and quietly brushed a patch of wet dirt off the side.
“Keep scrubbing that filth all you want,” Vanessa barked from the doorway, her voice dripping with venom. “You’re finished.”
I stood upright, holding my ruined bag in one hand, while a sleek, pitch-black Maybach smoothly turned into the private gated drive.
The heavy luxury vehicle glided forward in absolute silence, coming to a dead stop directly in front of the grand entrance steps.
The tinted rear door clicked open, and a middle-aged man in a razor-sharp charcoal bespoke suit stepped out onto the gravel.
He adjusted his silver-rimmed glasses and clutched a thick, gold-embossed leather folder tightly against his chest.
What happened after that is in the first comment, because that’s when the truth started leaking out.
Part 2
Vanessa straightened the lapels of her silk blazer and stepped past me with a triumphant smirk, her chin raised high.
She smoothed her hair down, clearly expecting one of her high-society country club board members or a delivery courier to emerge from the back seat.
Instead, Arthur Pendelton ignored her entirely, walking right past her without so much as a sideways glance.
He bypassed the open doorway and marched straight across the damp grass toward where I stood by the koi pond.
Arthur stopped inches away from my wet shoes, dropping into a deep, formal bow.
He held the thick, gold-embossed leather folder out toward me with both hands.
Vanessa let out a sharp, breathless squawk from the doorway.
“Hey! Are you completely blind?”
She stomped her foot hard against the marble threshold, her face flushing a furious shade of crimson.
“That’s just a miserable domestic servant you’re bowing to!”
Arthur remained completely still in his deep bow, keeping his eyes respectfully fixed on the ground before me.
He slowly straightened up, opening the heavy leather cover to reveal crisp, formal pages stamped with official seals.
“My apologies for the delay, Madam President,” Arthur said, his voice echoing clearly across the courtyard.
“The entire executive board is waiting inside your downtown offices for you to sign the dissolution order.”
Chapter 2: The Arrival of the Maybach and the Executive Bow
Vanessa stares at the silver-haired attorney, her breathing turning shallow and fast.
You must be completely insane, she hisses, taking a step backward across the manicured stone.
She points a manicured finger toward the woman in the faded apron standing beside the fountain.
This is just some cleaning woman I fired five minutes ago, Vanessa shrieks, her voice cracking against the marble pillars.
Arthur Pendelton adjusts his gold-rimmed spectacles without blinking.
Arthur ignores the outburst entirely.
He flips open the heavy leather portfolio resting against his tailored wool sleeve.
He pulls out thick sheaves of crisp, watermarked paper bearing the official seal of the California Secretary of State.
Allow me to introduce Elena Sterling, Arthur announces, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtyard.
Vanessa lets out a sharp, breathless laugh that sounds entirely forced.
That is just a fake name, she stutters, her eyes darting toward the black Maybach idling by the iron gates.
Arthur turns the heavy document toward the sunlight, pointing a gloved finger at the primary signature line.
Elena Sterling is the majority shareholder and controlling owner of Sterling Enterprises, Arthur recites smoothly.
He looks up, locking his gaze directly onto Vanessa’s trembling face.
And Sterling Enterprises happens to be the parent conglomerate that currently finances one hundred percent of Holloway Holdings.
The color drains from Vanessa’s face as if a physical veil has been lifted.
Her jaw hangs open, but no words come out of her throat.
Arthur reaches back into the leather folder and pulls out a secondary document stamped with a federal banking seal.
Furthermore, we are executing an immediate asset freeze on all liquid accounts held by Vanessa and Marcus Holloway, totaling fifteen million dollars.
Vanessa stumbles backward, her heels catching on the edge of the mosaic tile.
You cannot do that, she gasps, lifting a hand to shield her eyes from the afternoon glare.
She whips her head around to face the two private security guards standing near the entrance pavilion.
Remove them from the property right now, Vanessa screams, pointing frantically at Arthur and Elena.
The two security guards step forward, but stop dead in their tracks the moment Arthur flashes a small silver badge from his inner coat pocket.
Federal jurisdiction, the senior guard mutters, taking a distinct step backward.
Elena finally speaks, her voice quiet, steady, and utterly devoid of fear.
You spent three years cutting corners, stealing from employee pensions, and treating working people like dirt in my buildings, Elena says, stepping past Arthur.
Vanessa covers her ears with both hands, shaking her head violently.
This is a nightmare, she whispers to the empty air.
